About Key Kat's Havanese
My name is Melissa Sangster, and while my husband and I are successful business owners, my true passion has always been my dogs. I am a proud mother of three wonderful grown children and a grandmother to two beautiful granddaughters, both of whom play an important role in my life and even in raising puppies.
My journey with dogs began years ago with German Shepherds and Toy Poodles as family companions. Over time, I fell in love with Poodles of all sizes and acquired quality dogs from respected show breeders. From there, my love of showing and breeding dogs took root. I bred and championed Poodles in all three sizes for several years, gaining valuable experience and deep appreciation for the breed.
Everything changed the day a friend asked me to watch her Havanese puppies while she attended a dog show. Initially, I was disappointed they weren’t Poodles—but that disappointment quickly turned to joy. My daughter and I fell completely in love with those playful, affectionate puppies, each of us keeping one from that litter. From that moment, the Havanese became an inseparable part of my life. Eventually, I retired from breeding Poodles and now dedicate myself fully to raising Havanese. These little dogs are endlessly charming, mischievous, and loving truly a joy to live with.
The name Key Kat's is especially meaningful to me. It comes from a childhood nickname my father gave me, and the name continues to carry a special place in my heart.
Our Breeding Philosophy
At Key Kat's Havanese, my goal is to improve the breed and produce the highest-quality dogs possible. Many of my dogs are shown to prove they meet the AKC breed standard, and all of my breeding dogs undergo full health testing prior to being paired. This ensures that each litter is as healthy as possible, with sound genetics and strong temperaments.
I raise only a few litters each year, but every puppy is raised in my home as part of the family. They are handled daily, socialized with both adults and children, and receive the love and attention they need to thrive. My granddaughter especially enjoys helping with the puppies, and her time spent with them makes each puppy well-adjusted and people-friendly.
